18 Session 9: Midterm Review
| Unit | 2 — Measurement and Theory (synthesis) |
| Book Chapters | Review of Ch. 1–5 |
| Track | Common core (both tracks) |
18.1 Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
- Restate the conceptual arc of Sessions 1–8 in their own words: diagnosis → measurement → requirements.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computing all four midterm question types (multiple choice, short answer, quantitative problem, integrative case).
- Identify their weak areas in the Session 1–8 material and have a specific study plan for the next 48 hours.
- Construct a well-organized handwritten formula sheet covering the critical material.
18.2 Pre-Class Assignment
- Review: Sessions 1–8 lecture notes
- Work: PS1 solutions (released 48 hours after PS1 deadline)
- Practice: Sample questions from the midterm blueprint
- Prepare: Bring a draft formula sheet to class for review
18.3 In-Class Outline (75 minutes)
| Time | Segment | Format |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:05 | Logistics for midterm (room, materials, timing) | Lecture |
| 0:05–0:30 | Synthesis: the arc of Sessions 1–8 in one diagram | Lecture |
| 0:30–0:55 | Worked examples — one of each question type | Live problem-solving |
| 0:55–1:10 | Formula sheet review — what to include, what to omit | Activity |
| 1:10–1:15 | Q&A — bring your weak areas | Discussion |
18.4 Discussion Questions
For Q&A in the last 5 minutes:
- What’s the one concept from Sessions 1–8 you’re least confident about?
- Which question type do you find hardest — short answer, quantitative, conceptual, or integrative?
- What would you do differently if you could re-take Sessions 1–8?
18.5 What to Expect Next Session
Session 10 is the midterm exam. Arrive 10 minutes early. Bring all required materials. Power off phones.
After the midterm, Unit 3 begins with exit timing, portfolio construction, regulation, and platform implementation. The shift from “what’s wrong with DCF” to “what does GE-LAV deliver” begins.
